Subject: Bannockburn Citizens Association meeting on Thursday

As previously announced, Ambassador Richard Shifter, our neighbor, will be sharing his insights at our Bannockburn Citizens Association meeting on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at 7:30 pm at St. Mark’s (see directions below). I hope to see you on Thursday.
After receiving his L.L.B. from the Yale School of Law in 1951, Ambassador Schifter joined a law firm in Washington. He served the government with distinction in a number of capacities, including: From 1981 to 1986 and again in 1993 he represented the United States in the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, the UNESCO Committee on Conventions and Recommendations, and he served as Deputy United States Representative in the United Nations Security Council with the rank of Ambassador. From 1986 to 1992 he served as Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs, a position in which he played a key role in the U.S. effort to encourage the Soviet Government to release political prisoners, stop criminalizing political dissent and to allow the emigration of Soviet Jews. This story is told in the book written together with his Soviet counterpart, Anatoly Adamishin, “Human Rights, Perestroika and the End of the Cold War.” He will speak on that topic and on his thoughts on Russia today.
As always, the meeting will be an opportunity to visit with your neighbors, discuss BCA activities, and pass along news and comments. We particularly like to welcome new members to our community.
