Subject: Burglary Incident/BCA Dues
Date Sent: February 3, 2014

Neighbors: There was a burglary incident today that you should be aware of, in case you have not been contacted by one of your neighbors or our Bannockburn Citizens Association block captains.

Returned home on Nevis Rd. from a 3 hours absence to find: contents of drawers strewn about, one eMac computer turned around (bigger, newer iMac and smaller eMac untouched), heavy bed in basement guest room moved away from wall; every one of a dozen small ceramic containers on my dresser opened, a large planter removed from a top shelf and put on a chair; another container on same shelf untouched. Taken: about $100 in bills, but credit cards in same drawer left there; a ceramic jar full of coins on dresser emptied and left in hallway. Police came within 10 minutes, were professional and courteous. Since all doors were locked (to the best of our recollection) it's a big puzzle. Things seemed to be almost deliberately left in odd places - a bottle of Cognac on the dining room floor, a Medicare notice I had thrown in the trash this morning left draped over my computer. Neighbor saw in the time frame two people walking up our driveway - an adult and a child, with umbrellas (obscuring sex, race, age except for tall and much smaller).

John Hannula, chair of our BCA Neighborhood Security Committee, is trying to find out more about this incident. In the meantime, what we can all do is:

  1. Be vigilant. Reporting ANYTHING out of the ordinary to the MCPD non-emergency number (301-652-9200 - Bethesda station). This includes strange cars, people or other suspicious items. In the case of cars, take a picture of license plates when possible.
  2. Keep outdoor lights on at all times
  3. If out of town, keep interior and exterior lights on. Ask a neighbor to pick up mail and newspapers. Tell your neighbors if you're out of town.
  4. If you have a home security system, arm the system when at home, at night and anytime you leave the house
  5. Lock cars at all times. Unlocked cars entice thieves.

Best wishes,

Ted Garrett,
BCA President
